Is Your Home Safe While You’re Away?

We’ve all grown up with the stereotypical image of the burglar: A tall, thin man dressed all in black, slinking around your home looking for an open window to slip into or an unlocked door he can use to stealthily sneak inside and steal all your possessions while you sleep – and slip back out again before you know what happened.

But that’s far from the reality. In fact, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), most home burglaries do not take place at night. About 65 percent occur between 6am and 6pm when you are away from home and focused on work.

Why? Most burglars want to avoid conflict and so don’t want to risk encountering anyone who may put up resistance. The most common hours for a burglar to strike are between 10am and 3pm on weekdays, according to FBI statistics.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ (BJS) National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), which collects information from a sample of U.S. households that represents the nation, in 2016, U.S. households experienced 15.9 million property crimes (including burglaries) – a rate of 119.4 per 1,000 households.  According to the NCVS, thefts (12.0 million) accounted for the majority of property crimes. The victimization rate for theft (90.3 victimizations per 1,000 households) was higher than the rates for burglary (24.7 per 1,000) and motor vehicle theft (4.4 per 1,000).

So what about property crime, burglary and home safety in Kansas City?

FBI statistics show reported property crime and burglary data for the Kansas City area (sample area includes Kansas City and Independence, Mo., and Overland Park and Olathe, Kan., only) over the past two years:

  • Property crimes reported, 2016: 14,751; Burglaries: 2,868
  • Property crimes reported, 2017: 15,631; Burglaries: 2,740

Now that you know the statistics, you don’t want to become one! Be aware that most of these crimes will not occur when you are home at night or on weekends. Whether you’re away from your home each day or gone on a regular basis for travel, make sure to take a few steps to protect your home from opportunistic burglars and increase your home safety in Kansas City.

First, get to know your neighbors and tell them when you’re usually away from home. Keep in touch with them so they can watch out for your home when you’re away and you can watch out for theirs. Having a relationship with your neighbors will help them keep a closer eye on your home. If you’re friendly, they will know that you’re not moving and it will catch their eye if men dressed as workmen start bringing out your large items and loading them into a van in your driveway. Communicate with your neighbors whenever you can. An extra set of eyes always helps.

If no one is home during the day and you have a dog, take advantage of your pet. Whether he’s guard dog material or not, give Spot free reign of the house so he can protect your house. A barking dog makes your home much less attractive to a burglar, who doesn’t want confrontation and usually will move on to the next house if he hears a dog. If you don’t have a dog, leaving your TV on during the day, loud enough to be heard outside, can help dissuade burglars, too. Many of them will try ringing the doorbell or knocking on the door to see if the house is empty before breaking in.

The most important step toward making your home less attractive to burglars during the day is installing a home security and monitoring system. A home security system is a great layer of protection to make sure your home is protected while you are away for the day or on vacation.
